For Those Who Know Someone
Who Is Struggling With Depression

Depression itself is a sad reality, but surrounding that are sadder realities that make it hard to seek help.

It is one of the most common mental health disorders. In September 2021, the World Health Organization reported that about 280 million people worldwide have depression. People may compare it to the short-term bouts of depressive mood and low motivation, but depression hits a lot differently. It is extreme to the point where a person can consider ending their own life. Fortunately, it is treatable with the help of therapy and antidepressant medications.

Absolutely, it’s important to remember that depression is not anyone’s fault. You can’t place the burden of fixing someone with depression on yourself, but you can certainly offer your support and understanding. Here are some additional ways you can help:

  1. Learn the signs and symptoms
It is important to learn the signs and symptoms of depression. Recognizing these signs can be the first step toward seeking help and support for those who may be dealing with depression. Depression symptoms manifest differently from one person to another. They include: a loss of interest in most normal activities such as work, sex, and hobbies; social withdrawal; feelings of sadness and a negative outlook on life; irritability; sudden outbursts of anger and frustration over small things; frequent complaints of pain; tiredness and a lack of energy; changes in eating habits, such as eating less or more than usual; disruptions in sleep patterns, including sleeping too much or too little; and the use or abuse of substances, including prescription drugs.

  2. Be a compassionate listener
A simple act of talking face-to-face can be of great help to people suffering from depression. Encourage them to share their feelings and thoughts, and assure them that you’re there to listen without judgement. Offer your support and encouragement with phrases like, “Even if I can’t fully understand how you feel, I care about you and want to help,” or “You’re important to me, and your life matters to me.” Remember, an open and compassionate ear can often be more helpful than offering unsolicited advice.

  3. Understanding the risk of suicide is real
People with depression is at risk of suicide. When they feel very depressed they may contemplate suicide at some point. It’s crucial to remain vigilant for signs of suicidal behavior. If the person suddenly talks about suicide, attempts to acquire the means for suicide, withdraws from social contact, engages in unhealthy alcohol and drug abuse, displays aggressive behavior, gives away belongings, or says goodbye as if it’s the last time you’ll see them, take immediate action. Let the person know that you’re concerned, seek help, contact a suicide hotline, and make sure that they are safe.

  4. Urge them to seek help
While you can’t control the person suffering from depression, you can encourage them to seek help. Getting someone with depression into treatment can be challenging, but don’t hesitate to be their guiding light. They may resist initially, but you can suggest accompanying them to a general check-up, finding a therapist, and exploring effective treatment options together. Show them your unwavering support and lead by example, such as by living a healthier life and engaging in exercise activities. Let them know you’re with them every step of the way, and be ready to provide support and help when they’re willing to accept it. It’s essential to maintain realistic expectations because getting treatment for depression is not a simple path, and recovery doesn’t occur overnight.

  5. Take care of yourself

Supporting a loved one or someone you care about who is battling depression can be exceptionally challenging. The physical, emotional, and mental strain may eventually lead to burnout. To mitigate this, consider seeking support from others, maintaining connections with friends, and staying socially active. Remember to set boundaries as you can’t be a caregiver all the time. Taking steps to maintain your own well-being, including engaging in physical and social activities, is crucial. Prioritize your mental health, and always practice patience in this demanding journey.

Conclusion

Assisting a person with depression can be profoundly challenging. When you know someone who is suffering from depression, you might find yourself feeling helpless and uncertain about how to provide support.

The key is to educate yourself about what depression is and what kind of support you can offer to those experiencing it. Difficulty in seeking help can be due to lack of awareness by the person who has it or by the people surrounding them. Some people are dismissive of mental health illnesses and would attribute them to the person’s character. They may be told to “just be happy” or “not be sad,” which, as you rightly pointed out, is not an easy task for someone with depression.

People with depression may benefit from open and compassionate conversation to know what are the potential causes. Most of the time, though, causes of depression may not just be one or two things. It is a complex interplay of personal, social, and environmental situations.
